Sister Teresa Mary Duncan

1923-2016

The death of Sister Teresa Mary Duncan (Sister Marie George) occurred on Monday November 7, 2016 at Ruth Ross Residence.

Born in Salisbury, NB, she was the daughter of the late George and Margaret (Monahan) Duncan. She graduated from Salisbury High School and Mount Carmel Business College in Saint John in 1941. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception on September 8, 1942. Sister Duncan taught at Mount Carmel Academy from 1944-1948. She received her teacher’s training in Home Economics and graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor Degree in Home Economics. Sister Duncan was Director of the Dietary Dept. at Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Saint John from 1955-1960 and of the Dietary Dept. at Holy Family Hospital in Prince Albert Saskatchewan from 1960-1962 and from 1963-69. During the interim year, she taught at the Business College in Hanna, Alberta. She served in the Dietary Dept. at the University of Saskatoon and Melfort Union Hospital in Saskatchewan.

Sister Teresa served as a Pastoral Associate at St. Matthew’s Parish in Edmonton, Alberta and as a Missionary in Peru, South America from 1977-1983. Returning to Canada she became involved in ministry with the First Nations People in Northern Saskatchewan from 1984-1992. She received her Massage Therapy Certificate in Edmonton and served as a Massage Therapist at Ruth Ross Residence and later in Moncton, NB from 1998-2003.

Sister Duncan returned to Saint John and continued offering different forms of therapy to the senior Sisters at Ruth Ross Residence where she then resided permanently until her passing.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters: Bernice O’Sullivan, Edith Herrington, Catherine King, Blanche Frenzel, Sister Helen Duncan (SCIC), Sister Rita Duncan (SCIC), and Ethel Roy; as well as her brothers: Donald Duncan, George Duncan and Francis Duncan.

Resting at Ruth Ross Residence, 105 Burpee Avenue, visiting is on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 from 2-4PM and 7-9PM at Carmel Chapel. The vigil prayer will be celebrated at 7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 10:00AM at Carmel Chapel, Ruth Ross Residence. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
