Gertrude Marilyn Mooney

1943-2017

Gertrude Marilyn Mooney
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear sister and aunt, Gertrude. Gertrude Marilyn Mooney was born on December 5, 1943 and grew up on Queen Square in the south end of Saint John. She was a lifelong member of St John the Baptist Parish and attended St. John the Baptist School, St. Vincent’s Girls High School and graduated from St. Francis Xavier University. She then went on to obtain her Masters in Education from Mount St. Vincent. She was a well-known and beloved teacher at St. Vincent’s High School from 1965 until retirement.

Gertrude lived her life for her family and her faith. If you knew her you loved her. She journeyed through life caring for anyone that God put in her path. She was an avid long distance runner and was challenged to do both the New York and Boston Marathons on several occasions. She traveled the Camino de Santiago in Spain and went on pilgrimages to the Holy Land and Rome for the canonizations of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II. She journeyed through her illness offering her suffering up for all of her loved ones and she carried that through until the moment of death.

Gertrude is survived by her sisters, Kathleen MacDougall and Evelyn (Denis) Morris; and sister-in-law, Rosamund Mooney. She is predeceased by her parents, Evelyn Lawlor and John Patrick Mooney; sisters: Constance Marr (Ralph), Geraldine Mooney and Barbara Moore (Raymond); brothers, John Patrick and Patrick James; brother…in…law, Joseph MacDougall; niece Suzanne MacDougall Cuttle; nephew, John Paul MacDougall and great niece, Leslie Bruce. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews and 8 loving godchildren.

Gertrude had a profoundly active faith life which embraced her parish as well as Christian Living Community and Atlantic Association of Spiritual Exercises Apostolate and was a great supporter of the Divine Mercy Catholic School.
