Sister Gertrude A. McCarthy
McCARTHY-the death of Sister Gertrude A. McCarthy (Sr. Maria) occurred at Ruth Ross Residence on Friday, April 9, 2010. Sister was born in Saint John, a daughter of the late Peter L. and Margaret (McAleer) McCarthy.
Sr. Gertrude entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate
Conception on February 2, 1934. She earned a Bachelor of Science in
Home Economics and worked as a Dietician at St. Joseph's Hospital,
Saint John, from 1940 to 1955. She moved to Prince Albert, Sask. and
worked as a dietician at Holy Family Hospital until 1961 when she
returned to St. Joseph's Hospital, Saint John, where she worked as
Dietician and Director of Food Service until 1985. Sister held the
position of Food Purchaser at St. Joseph's from 1985-1988. She then
served as Administrator and Co-ordinator of St. Vincent's Convent
until 1991. She also volunteered at the Information Desk at St.
Joseph's for several years. She was predeceased by a bother,
John McCarthy; and three sisters, Sister Veronica McCarthy, S.C.I.C.,
Mrs. Eileen Bonner, and Miss Catherine McCarthy. She is survived by
one sister, Mrs. Maria Daigle of Saint John; and several nieces and
nephews.
Resting at St. Vincent's Convent, 31
Cliff St., with visiting on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.Mass of
Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Vincent's Chapel on Monday
morning at ten o'clock. Interment will take place in the
Sisters of Charity Plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Evening Prayer Vigil
will be held on Sunday evening at seven o'clock.
