Rev. E. John HIGGINS
1926-2011
HIGGINS, Rev. E. John-the death of Rev. Edward John Higgins,
a retired priest of the Dioceses of Saint John, occurred
unexpectedly at his residence in Fredericton on Good Friday, April
22, 2011. Fr. Higgins was born in Saint John on September
14, 1926, one of two sons of the late Edward R. and Catherine E.
(Walsh) Higgins. After high school, he began studies in Classics at
College Sainte Anne, Church Pointe, N.S. Upon graduation he
began formation for the priesthood in Sacred Heart Seminary, Halifax.
He was ordained to the priesthood in the Cathedral of the Immaculate
Conception by Most Rev. P. A. Bray, C.J.M, Bishop of Saint John, on
May 19, 1951. He served as Associate Pastor in Holy Rosary Parish,
Minto, St. Andrew's Parish, St. Andrew's, the Cathedral, where he was
Director of Catholic Charities, St. Thomas University, Chatham, where
he was Dan of Men. He was Administrator of St. Bonaventure's Parish,
Lakeville. In 1964 he was appointed Pastor of St.
Joseph's
Parish, Chipman and in 1967 he was appointed Pastor of Holy Rosary
Parish, Minto, where he served for many years. In 1989 he was
appointed Pastor of St. Anthony's Parish, Fredericton, from where he
retired in 1992. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Brian Higgins of
Saint John; one niece; and four nephews.
Resting at the Cathedral Rectory, 91 Waterloo
St., with visiting on Monday from 2 to 4. Solemn Vespers will be held
in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Monday evening at
seven o'clock followed by visitation until nine o'clock. Mass of
Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral on Tuesday
morning at ten o'clock. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's
Cemetery.
